Some thoughts on Monica Lewinsky's anti-bullying campaign

Monica Lewinsky was a former White House intern with whom President Bill Clinton admitted to having had an "inappropriate relationship" while she worked at the White House in 1995 and 1996. The affair which became referred to as the Lewinsky scandal, tainted our nation's image and resulted in Clinton's impeachment.

Today - seemingly quite "out of the blue" - Lewinsky has resurfaced to become the voice of anti-bullying, as she told an audience in Philadelphia on October 20, 2014. Her speech - and her goal - come as the former White House intern steps into the public eye after years of trying to live privately.

While this is certainly a noble and admirable goal (because bullying is a terrible crime that has not only destroyed lives, but has even led some to commit suicide), she made a comment that reveals she still has no clue as to the gravity of her past actions; a comment wherein she is is clearly downplaying her affair with President Clinton, as if it were no big deal. The comment was: "It happens."

Lewinsky said: "Sixteen years ago, fresh out of college, a 22 year old intern in the White House - and more than averagely romantic - I fell in love with my boss in a 22-year old sort of way. It happens," Lewinsky said. "But my boss was the president of the United States. That probably happens less often. Now I deeply regret it for many reasons, not the least of which is that people were hurt. And that is never okay."

It happens? If Lewinsky had been a starry-eyed 16 year old at the time of the affair, that comment might not have sounded so silly and flippant. But she was 22, a fully-grown adult with a college education, working in the WHITE HOUSE. At 22, people usually know "right from wrong" - especially a young lady with high aspirations who should have known better than to "play house" with a married man in the Oval Office!

(We cannot even bring ourselves to address President Clinton's part in this, and remain calm and collected, so we will simply say this: This married man and leader of the Free World abused the most powerful position on earth and led an impressionable young woman astray - all the while "going to church" and pretending he was holy. His actions were absolutely despicable and he will certainly have a lot to answer for on Judgment Day ... and our prayer is that he has truly repented and given his life to God....)

Whether Monica was a "believer" in YHWH or not, she committed several sins - not only against YHWH, but also against herself, and both President Clinton and his wife, Hillary - and her actions were surely an embarrassment to her parents:

We certainly do not wish, nor have the right to sit in judgment of this woman; but as Torah observant believers in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, we must live by His Word and not be afraid to point out when public figures speak or behave in a way that blatantly goes against Torah. God only knows, we ALL fall short of the glory of God and are guilty of sinning (Romans 3:23) ... but we should NEVER downplay the seriousness of those sins.

What do we mean by this? Well, Americans have the RIGHT to choose God - or not. No gray area! But the truth is most, whether they realize it or not, CONDONE sinning; they have rejected YHWH's command to "be holy because I am holy" (Leviticus 20:26, Leviticus 11:44-45, 1 Peter 1:13-16.) Following are some examples:

Many claim to "believe" in God and they run to church and warm the pews every Sunday - and after the service, they promptly head to the movies where they root for the woman who commits adultery because she's bored, or because her husband is abusive, or whatever (Exodus 20:14). They root for vigilantes who seek out and kill prostitutes or drug dealers, etc., never mind that murder is a sin (Exodus 20:13). They don't even cringe when cuss words are thrown around, or close their eyes during explicit sex scenes that leave nothing to the imagination!

They root for the mythical underdog Walter White in "Breaking Bad" - a struggling high school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer and turns to a life of crime, producing and selling crystallized methamphetamine and even killing in the process, in order to secure his family's financial future before he dies (Exodus 20:12-17).

Many, if not most, are hypocrites! We have become so desensitized to SIN, that it doesn't even faze most of us anymore. Many don't take God's commands seriously because they're under the erroneous belief that "I'm under grace; I believe in Jesus and that He died for me, and He forgives me, no matter what I do!"

BIG, HUGE mistake! Please see our article on deliberate sinning which amply outlines why deliberate sinning will cause eternal separation from God!

We don't know where Monica Lewinsky is in her spiritual walk with God, but we pray that He would have mercy on her and open her eyes and mind so that she can truly repent and get herself "right" with Him ... that He would cause her to see that what she did as a young adult who should have known better, was not just something "that happens." It was very serious sin that requires true repentance and a turning to YHWH/Y'shua for forgiveness.
