Yeshua's lineage....
Yeshua's lineage....
Many counter-missionary Jews and their followers attempt to disprove Yeshua by attacking His lineage. Below is a brief outline revealing that He was exactly who He said He was: The Son of David:
The biggest counter-missionary argument is that God cannot have a mother, nor can He be born or die. Absolutely true! However, He did have a Son whom He chose to have born of an almah (virgin) named Maryam.
Isaiah 7: 14 Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign: behold, the young woman shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Isaiah 9: For a child is born to us, a son is given to us; dominion will rest on his shoulders, and he will be given the name Pele-Yo'etz El Gibbor Avi-'Ad Sar-Shalom [Wonder of a Counselor, Mighty God, Father of Eternity, Prince of Peace],
Jeremiah 23:5-6: 5 "The days are coming," says ADONAI when I will raise a righteous Branch for David. He will reign as king and succeed, he will do what is just and right in the land. 6 In his days Y'hudah will be saved, Isra'el will live in safety, and the name given to him will be ADONAI Tzidkenu [ADONAI our righteousness].
Proverbs 30: 4 Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Who has cupped the wind in the palms of his hands? Who has wrapped up the waters in his cloak? Who established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son's name? Surely you know!
Other arguments of counter-missionaries include the assertion that there is no evidence that Maryam descends from David, which would disqualify her from being a Messianic progenitor. Our response to that is: The genealogy in Matthew 1 is that of Mary, from Avraham, through David, to her guardian or adopted father, Yoseph (note: not her husband Yoseph) - decidedly from the line of David. She had no brothers and there were no siblings to take care of her while she was alive because of Y'shua commanding her into John's care:
John 19: 26. And Y'shua saw his mother and a disciple whom he loved who was standing there, and he said to his mother, Woman, behold your son. 27. And he said to that disciple, Behold your mother. And at that hour that disciple took her with him.
The Bible provides two lineages (Matthew, providing the lineage of Mary, and Luke, the lineage of Yoseph, her husband) to demonstrate that both of Y'shua's parents are from the same tribe. No brothers plus the same tribe means the exception of matriarchal inheritance applies here.
(Maryam was not - contrary to what the Catholics might believe - the "mother of God" but rather, Y'shua's earthly mother. He was a human being with a Divine qnoma (nature). Since Maryam had no one else to take care of her, Y'shua made sure she would be in good hands after He was gone.)
No one ever attacked Y'shua's lineage in His lifetime. He is always called "son of David".
Matthew 1: 20 after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 9: 27 [Jesus Heals the Blind and Mute] As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, "Have mercy on us,Son of David!"
Matthew 12: 23 All the people were astonished and said, "Could this be the Son of David?"
Matthew 15: 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession."
Matthew 20: 30 Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!"
Matthew 20: 31 The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!"
Matthew 21: 9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Hosanna in the highest!"
Matthew 21: 15 But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple area, "Hosanna to the Son of David," they were indignant.
Matthew 22: 42 "What do you think about the Christ ? Whose son is he?" "The son of David," they replied.
Mark 10: 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"
Mark 10: 48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, " Son of David, have mercy on me!"
Mark 12: 35 [Whose Son Is the Christ?] [12:35-37pp -- Mt 22:41-46; Lk 20:41-44 12:38-40pp -- Mt 23:1-7; Lk 20:45-47] While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked, "How is it that the teachers of the law say that the Christ is the son of David?
Luke 1: 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,
Luke 3: 31 He called out, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"
Luke 18: 34 Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"
Matthew 1 confirms independently that there was no male heir for Mary's father (also named Joseph):
Matthew 1: 1. The book of the genealogy of Y'shua the Mashiyach, the son of Dawid, the son of Awraham. 2. Awraham fathered Yitz'chak, Yitz'chak fathered Ya'akov. Uziyahu fathered Yotham, Yotham fathered Akhaz, Akhaz fathered Hizkiyahu.
10. Hizkiyahu fathered M'nasheh, M'nasheh fathered Amon, Amon fathered Yoshiyahu. 11. Yoshiyahu fathered Yochanyahu and his brothers about [the time of] the captivity of Bavel. 12. Furthermore - In addition to the LXX translating "almah" as "parthenos" the Aramaic Tanakh translation, compiled in Babylon by JEWS in about 50 BCE, rendered "almah" as "beytolata" the cognate of Hebrew betshula--exclusive meaning: VIRGIN.
These same Babylonian rabbis would not have translated as such after the "controversy" of Y'shua's advent, and the Aramaic Tanakh, while grossly understudied, is a huge friend to the tradtional Jewish Masoretic Text, showing how almah was understood.
Please also note that Rebekah is known to have been a virgin in Genesis, but is called "almah" in Hebrew....
We defy any rabbi anywhere on earth show us a place in Tanakh where a young maiden of marriageable age - the definition of almah - was not assumed to be a virgin unless otherwise stated directly in Hebrew grammar. They are playing games and we are not fooled!
